AudioVisual CircuitCircus

AudioVisual CircuitCircus is a performance concept where acrobatic movement is transformed into sound, melody, rhythms and music. The movement of an acrobat or a performer is captured via sensors and microcontrollers and volumetric capture, then processed to create musical landscapes and arrangements. The spectators can participate in the creation with sensors positioned in the audience and their mobile devices. The gestures of the performer and audience affects the soundscape by adding layers and effects to the loop and changing the tempo. Also the light and video will be programmed to take commands from motion and music.

As a circus artist my artistic practice is rooted in acrobatic movement. I fuse it with live music created either by more traditional methods and instruments like guitars and electric basses or via a more embedded approach with sensors attached to the body. Bending the limitations of the human body in my expression, I strive to also move the body and mind of my audiences. As a sensitive person I am intrigued by how feelings and physical behaviour interact. Being aware and taking into consideration the atmosphere in the public is important to me while maintaining a sense of independence in my creative process.

After two decades of practicing circus and music my next step was to create a seamless method of combining the two artforms in a project called AudioVisual CircuitCircus. With today’s technology, gadgets and information such a task becomes easier to tackle. Yet, it is usually the simplest solution that works best. Audio as a mere dance of airwaves paralleled with visual stimuli as simple as a person walking past can evoke our imagination and send us to faraway places. There is no need for virtual reality gadgets rendering images to each individual’s retinas. We can experience art as a community.

In my body of work I aim to astound with acrobatic ability, entertain with physical comedy and stir up the thought process about the subject matter of each of my productions. While it is impossible to omit the klishes of traditional circus and hard to avoid falling into the pitfalls of contemporary circus, I aspire to create a distinctive style in performing arts.
